HBO Miniseries – The Pacific

This actually makes me a little upset that I don't have HBO at the moment. The Pacific is a ten part miniseries by Dreamworks, and they spent a reported $200 million to make it. This miniseries does for the World War II Pacific theater, what Band of Brothers did for the war in Europe. I think Band of Brothers is a must watch, so I think this should be amazing seeing as Dreamworks is responsible for both.

The first episode is this Sunday, March 14th. I'll probably have to catch it once it hits Blu-ray, so if you catch it this week, let me know how it is.

Here's the press release on it:

HBO MINISERIES PRESENTS THE PACIFIC, AN EPIC TEN-PART EVENT, A PLAYTONE AND DREAMWORKS PRODUCTION, EXECUTIVE PRODUCED BY TOM HANKS, STEVEN SPIELBERG AND GARY GOETZMAN, AND STARRING JAMES BADGE DALE, JOE MAZZELLO AND JON SEDA

THE STORY OF U.S. MARINES IN THE PACIFIC THEATER OF WORLD WAR II DEBUTS MARCH 14 ON HBO

Directed By Carl Franklin, David Nutter, Jeremy Podeswa, Tony To, Tim Van Patten And Graham Yost; Written By Laurence Andries, Michelle Ashford, Bruce C. McKenna, George Pelecanos, Robert Schenkkan And Graham Yost.

"It is not a history, and it is not my story alone. I have attempted, rather, to be the spokesman for my comrades, who were swept with me into the abyss of war." Eugene B. Sledge, With the Old Breed

The epic ten-part miniseries event THE PACIFIC debuts with Part One on SUNDAY, MARCH 14 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT), followed by other parts debuting on consecutive Sundays at the same time through May 16.

The HBO Miniseries presentation of a Playtone and DreamWorks production is executive produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman, the producing team behind the Emmy(R) Award-winning and Golden Globe-winning 2001 HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers." Hanks and Goetzman also executive produced the HBO miniseries "John Adams," which won a record-breaking 13 Emmys(R) in 2008.

THE PACIFIC tracks the intertwined real-life journeys of three U.S. Marines Robert Leckie (James Badge Dale), Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello) and John Basilone (Jon Seda) across the vast canvas of the Pacific Theater during World War II. The miniseries follows these men and their fellow Marines from their first battle with the Japanese on Guadalcanal, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and the strongholds of Peleliu, across the bloody sands of Iwo Jima and through the horror of Okinawa, and finally to their triumphant but uneasy return home after V-J Day.

The miniseries is based in part on the books "Helmet for My Pillow," by Robert Leckie, and "With the Old Breed," by Eugene B. Sledge, with additional material from "Red Blood, Black Sand," by Chuck Tatum, and "China Marine," by Eugene B. Sledge, as well as original interviews conducted by the filmmakers.

ESPN To Create A 3D Channel

I love this idea. The downside is that most people will need to upgrade their TV to even see the game. However, when they tested this out during the USC vs. Ohio State game, they showed it in several movie theaters. I'd be more than happy to hit a local theater that serves food and beer to watch the game.

Here's the details from ESPN:

Sports broadcasting will enter a new dimension in 2010 … the third dimension, as ESPN will unveil the industry's first 3-D network.

ESPN 3D will showcase a minimum of 85 live sporting events during its first year, beginning June 11 with the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match, featuring South Africa versus Mexico, ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer announced.

Other events to be produced in 3-D include the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, college basketball and football contests, up to 25 World Cup matches and the Summer X Games. Additional events will be announced at a later date.

RedEye Turns Your iPhone Into A Universal Remote

I love this idea. There's been a few things like this here and there, but because thing one converts the iPhone Wi-Fi signal to infrared, it can control just about anything. Here's the press release with all of the details:

RedEye uses Wi-Fi to turn the iPhone or iPod touch into a personal remote that controls any infrared device from any room in the home

Waltham, MA – December 2, 2009 — ThinkFlood (http://thinkflood.com/) today announced availability of the RedEye personal remote control for iPhone and iPod touch (http://redeyeremote.com/). RedEye is the only complete universal remote control system for the iPhone and iPod touch that allows users to control virtually any home entertainment device from any room in the home.

The RedEye system is easy to use, and set up is simple (watch RedEye setup demo: http://thinkflood.com/products/redeye/getting-started/). Customers download the free RedEye app from the iTunes App Store, and place the RedEye base station in the same room as the equipment it will control. The iPhone or iPod touch communicates with the RedEye base station through the customer’s wireless network to control TVs, DVRs, stereos, gaming equipment and more.

Customers can download codes from RedEye's global code database, which is updated regularly. RedEye also has a learning function, which allows users to program commands using an existing device remote.

“We wanted to create something more than just another remote control,” said Matt Eagar, president and co-founder of ThinkFlood. “Internet connectivity and future software updates give us a lot of room to think big.”

Why choose RedEye instead of a traditional universal remote or home automation system?

  • For only $188, RedEye offers benefits that were previously available only in full home automation systems and high-end universal remotes. Systems that offer similar levels of control require professional installation, technical know-how, or an entire day of frustration. The RedEye base station also doubles as a charging dock.
  • Instead of having one remote for every device — or even an oversized universal remote with too many buttons — RedEye customers only need to handle an iPhone or iPod touch.
  • RedEye supports multiple rooms, controllers, and users simultaneously. It controls a virtually unlimited number of devices and can store a virtually unlimited number of commands, far exceeding competitive product offerings.
  • RedEye offers activity-based control, meaning users can program RedEye to execute a series of commands with only one touch. Additionally, only the buttons appropriate to the activity appear on the screen.
  • RedEye users can customize the way they control their equipment with touchscreen buttons, Apple’s Multi-Touch gestures, and accelerometer controls. For example swiping two fingers down the screen can reduce volume and flicking the iPhone forward can change the channel (watch accelerometer gestures demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=506PyY-iK1I).
  • RedEye is available through the ThinkFlood website (https://thinkflood.com/buy/products/redeye/), which also lists participating dealers and retail locations.

The Merium Home Entertainment PC

I've been interested in getting something like this for a while, since I think it would be great to use the PC on the big TV, without having to get up and go into the computer room to look something up. This just might fit the bill. From the web site:

Ever wanted to combine the following; media entertainment, a safe place for your valuable digital content and a piece of great looking furniture? Mesiro, an innovative provider of digital media solutions with outstanding Scandinavian design, is now launching one combined solution addressing it all – The Mesiro Merium.

The Mesiro Merium meets consumer needs for a digital all-in-one solution that offers a user friendly way to enjoy and experience media at home. This innovative Home Entertainment PC enables you to take full advantage of the Internet in your living room, as well as enjoying your music, photos or camera recordings on your flat screen TV. The Merium is always ready to display entertaining media just one click away.

The technical specs on this isn't bad, though the video card isn't the greatest. The system costs $999 which is also a little pricey.

You can read more about the Merium at their website HERE.

Burn Notice

This is a little out of the ordinary for the site, but it's sounds like this new series might be fun. Plus, you really can't go wrong when you have Bruce Campbell in anything.

Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) has spent most of his life working as a spy. That was, until yesterday. You see, when a spy gets fired, he doesn't get a call from the lady in HR and a handshake. They burn him, cut him off, and make sure he can never work again. Bottom line, they froze his bank accounts, erased his security clearance, and left him out in the cold…in sunny Miami, the hometown of crime, drugs, plantains and thongs. Now, he's just trying to make a living while he figures out who wants him dead.

Michael is joined by Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) an ex-IRA operative, who also happens to be an ex-girlfriend; and Sam (Bruce Campbell), a washed-out military intelligence contact who's being used by the feds to keep tabs on Michael. He's also forced to confront the family he went halfway around the world to get away from – particularly his mother, Madeline (Sharon Gless) who couldn't be happier to have her son back in town.

Burn Notice premieres June 28th, with new episodes Thursdays at 10/9c on USA Network.

Last Man Standing

BBC Television and The Discovery Channel are looking for people to be part of a new reality show called Last Man Standing. I'm not usually a fan of reality shows, but this one sounds interesting. Here's the press release:

Sporting activities have been part of human life for millennia. This ground breaking BBC series is a celebration of traditional sports. It will explore the incredible cultural richness of indigenous sporting events and festivals around the world.

Last Man Standing will look at the indigenous sports of eight very different communities, from the Arctic to the Amazon, from Africa to Asia, to uncover some of the toughest events on the planet, and provide an insight into the ancient history and culture of some of the world's most remote areas and the people who live there.

To really learn about each particular sport, six athletes from the UK and USA will spend a week immersed in the sport and culture. The athletes will eat and sleep with the community and live as they do.

They will train with them and learn rare insights into the sport and the way of life. At the end of the week, they will take part in the activity and play by local rules.

The series will explore the cultural and religious significance of each sport with sensitivity and respect. With the help of local guides and mentors, the athletes will also learn about the history and relevance of each sport.

It will, through showing features and emotions common to people the world over, promote understanding and respect for different ways of life. These sporting events, although firmly rooted in each specific culture, will also highlight how much very different peoples of the world have in common.

This landmark series will show some of the most unusual, colourful sporting events in a variety of countries, and will provide an entertaining and fresh insight into some of the richest cultures in the world.

The show has already wrapped up shooting it's first season, scheduled to air mid 2007, and they're looking for people to sign up for season two. If you think you might have what it takes to join the show, you can get in touch with the them by sending an email to LastManStandingCasting@gmail.com.
