PokerJunkie.com’s 18 Essential Home Game Poker Accessories

This is a pretty good list. There's a number of things that are way too easy, like poker chips, some you wouldn't think of like an automatic card shuffler, and things that are a little off the wall like steel playing cards.

You can check out the site HERE to see the whole list.

Poker: The Us Versus Them Strategy

I came up with this at the poker table at the Hollywood Casino near Cincinnati. I'm sure that I'm not the first person to think of this, but I thought I would pass it along.

First off, you need to be at one end of the table. Seat two or seat eight is the best. Next, you need to start up a conversation with the guys right around you about poker. Now, what do you say? The best thing I've found is to give out a little information about the players at the other end of the table. Even if it's a guess about what someone had, if they were bluffing, or so on. This starts things off.

From there, you need to find some way to talk a little bad about the players at the other end of the table. You don't need to over do it, just little jabs. The best is if the other end of the table is winning, to say something like "Those chips need to start coming to our side of the table", or "When are we going to start getting cards?". The idea is to say something positive, and include the one or two guys on either side of you. In creates the idea that you're all in it together against the other end of the table.

The fact that you're talking about other end of the table, also means that their less likely to hear you talking about them.

What does this do for you? A couple of things.

One, if you have more talkative people around you, they might start giving you information about things they see the other players doing. Three sets of eyes are always better than one.

Two, if they're the friendly type, they might not try so hard to take your money. They might fold a little easier, bet a little weaker, and so on.This makes it easier for you to concentrate on the other players around the table.

Finally, they might also give you a lot of information about themselves, and how they play. Things like telling you what they had, why they played a hard the way they did, or even their general strategy. You might find out something that will help you later if you do end up in a big hand against them.

You can get a lot of things like this from just being friendly, but for more serious players, that doesn't always work. I've found though that if they think you're in it together, against the other players, even hard cases are more forthcoming.

The downside of all of this is that the second you take their money, they're probably going to stop talking to you. If you take a small hand or two, show them you had good cards, tell them your sorry and act like you mean it, you might be able to keep things rolling. The longer the better.

This isn't something that you can do all the time. It has to be the right situation to give it a try, but it can give you quite and advantage.

Let me know what you think.

Flask With Playing Cards

This is one of those things I wish I would have thought of. It's pretty much exactly what it looks like:

A flask that holds not only your favorite liquor, but also a deck of playing cards in case a poker game breaks out.

It's made out of stainless steel, and only cost $30. They have them in stock at the moment, but something like this won't last long.

You can go buy yourself one over at the Taylor Gifts site HERE.

Back From Vegas

I've never had a bad time in Vegas. Maybe the one day I was up all night, and then was woken up by my six friends who were heading to the airport 12 hours early because they were all broke, but that was only one day. Up until then, it was a blast.

Anyway, this trip was no different. Had a great time, and did pretty well at the poker tables. Nothing fantastic, but decent. I took in $250 at the cash tables, and in the four tourneys I played in, I came in 18th, 8th, 5th, and 3rd. I only won $220 for third place in the one, and the 5th place finish made me the bubble boy, which still upsets me. They were all 30-60 person tournaments, so nothing huge. I just didn't have the time to hit the bigger ones that have a $125+ entry fee and 100 people in them. Still, not a bad haul for only playing here and there.

Yes, I did totally miss putting up any football picks. Not that it would have helped at all. The picks I made in Vegas all went three for four or five in my parlays. I need to learn to just beat the teams strait up, and I'd do a shole hell of a lot better.

I know you've heard it all before, but I'll try to get my picks up this week. Maybe not the whole list of teams this time around, but just my picks. Makes it a lot easier.

Any suggestions for the upcoming week?

Win Your Chance To Play Poker For 1 Million

The World Poker Tour has a poker portion of their site called ClubWPT. The idea is that you pay your $20 a month subscription fee to the site, and you get to play in a number of tournaments to win reall cash and prizes. Here's the details from the site:

It's the subscription poker site of the World Poker Tour, and a better way to play poker. No more risking your entire bankroll playing No-Limit or spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on tournament fees and rake. For just $19.95 a month, you can play dozens of tournaments and win as much as your skills allow. Tournaments cost points — not cash — to enter. And if you lose, your points balance is refreshed each day!

You can check out the ClubWPT site HERE if you're interested.

Has anyone tried this? I was wondering if it was worth the $20 a month or not.

WSOP Almost Down To 27 Players

The players at the WSOP Main Event are currently on a 90-minute dinner break as I write this. There are 29 players left, so only two more need to bust out for everyone else to make it to Day 8.

I decided not to use any names in this update, just in case someone is in avoidance mode. For the rest of you, I will say that there are two really big names left, and one of them is currently sitting in the number two chip spot.

By the time this post pops up on Wednesday they will already be down to 27, and getting ready to play to see who will sit at the final table.

You can check out the standings at the WSOP site HERE. I'll warn you though, the site is running pretty slow while they're playing.

WSOP Turns Away 500 Players

I've heard this a few places, but don't have any solid numbers from the WSOP.

The rumor is that since there are only 2,800 seats for each of the Day 1s, and around 500 people were turned away on Day 1D. Among those that were turned away were reported to be T.J. Cloutier and Patrik Antonius.

There were officially 6,494 players in this year tournament. If the 500 or so players were allowed to join, that would have put the total number of players at about 7,000, or about 150 more than last year (2008).

No idea why so many people waited to get in on Day 1D. If I had to guess, it's that they didn't want to have to wait several days to play again on Day 2A or 2B. If you're in a good rhythm on Day 1A, there would be three days of sitting around doing nothing until Day 2A, when you would play again. Where as if you play on Day 1D, you only have to wait a day to play in Day 2B.

I really think the WSOP should do something about that, but I don't see anything changing anytime soon. The Rio just can't hold any more people, and I doubt they would let it be held someplace else, as I'm sure it pulls in huge crowds.

WSOP Final Numbers

The World Series Of Poker Main Event got a big shot in the arm yesterday as 2,809 entered the tournament on day 1D. That brought the total number of players to 6,494, just 350 people short of last year's total (6,844), and more people than in 2007 (6,349).

That's a really good turn out, concidering the number of players for the three previous day 1's were all down, making it look like it would be a much smaller field than last year. Reports state that there would have been even more players on day 1D, but they actually ran out of space for them.

This year's total prize pool is $61,043,600. This year's winner will take home over $8.5 million, and everyone who makes the final table is guaranteed to come away a millionaire.

You can follow PokerNews' coverage of Day 2A beginning today (Tuesday) at noon Vegas time, at the WSOP site HERE.

World Series Of Poker Main Event Has Begun

The WSOP Main Event started on July 3rd, and will run through July 15th. Final numbers aren't out yet, but it looks like there's going to be fewer players than last year. I can't say that's really that unexpected, and probably says less about poker than it does about the current world economy.

It still looks like it's possible that there will be over 5,000 players, which is still huge. They are currently in the middle of Day 1C (Sunday), with 1D tomorrow (Monday). By Monday afternoon, they should have a final count of how many players there will be, and what the first place prize money will be. I'll try to get that update in tomorrow.

If you want to follow the events, you can hit the WSOP site HERE.
