Two For Two This Weekend

Didn't do so well this weekend, going two for two. In my defense, no one could have seen Bradford going down. Though BYU did look really good.

I won with Auburn and Nebraska this weekend, Oklahoma of course lost, and LSU won but came no where close to covering the spread.

I'll try to get next week's list and picks up around Wednesday, and we'll see if I can do better than 50% next weekend.

My WAY Late Picks

I promise that I'll get my picks up much earlier, and I'm hopefully going to set it up to where you can vote on teams.

Anyway, here are my top four:

BYU Cougars +23      Oklahoma Sooners -23

Pick: Oklahoma -23  -  I really think Oklahoma is going to come out firing, and put up some big points on BYU.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs +13½    Auburn Tigers -13½

Pick: Auburn -13½  -  This should be a pretty good game, and that half a point might come into play. Overall though, I like Auburn, and think they should win by 14 or more.

LSU Tigers -19    Washington Huskies +19

Pick: LSU -19  -  I like this pick, but Washington could show up and make it interesting. I'd still bet it, but not throw a bunch of money on it.

Florida Atlantic Owls +23½    Nebraska Cornhuskers -23½

Pick: Nebraska Cornhuskers -23½  -  This might actually be a 40+ point win for Nebraska. Even if Nebraska is looking ahead to next week, I still think they can win by 30.

So there they are. Nothing all that fantastic in there, but it's the first week of football, and I haven't seen many of the teams play. The first week, you always take those games taht should be a lock. The LSU – Washington game is a little shady, but if LSU plays just ok, it should be fine.

Games I stayed away from:

Ohio State vs. Navy – OSU needs to win this one by 23. Totally possible. It's the first game though, and as much as I hate to say it, the Buckeyes could already be looking to USC next week. IfOSU starts out a little slow, and take it easy on Navy late in the game, this could also easily be a 17 point game. I would pick OSU though it I had to.

Western Michigan Broncos vs. Michigan Wolverines – Yeah, not going to touch a Michigan game all year.

Nevada Wolf Pack vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish – ND could have a pretty good year. I really need to see how ND plays on defense first, before I start picking for or against them.

Georgia Bulldogs vs, Oklahoma State Cowboys – Way too early to pick a close game like this. This is totally a coin flip. I'd like to see Georgia win it though.

Again, I'll post my picks a lot earlier next week, and post how I did come Monday morning. I'm also looking forward to throwing in the NFL games into the mix next week.

Peter King Challange Las Vegas Contest

Pretty decent contest here, but you do have to work at it.

The idea is pretty simple. You pick the right team each week, along with the home team score, away team score, and how many first downs there will be. If you're the winner at the end of the season, you win the Grand Prize.

The Grand Prize is a 6 days/5 nights trip for winner and guest to Wynn Las Vegas Hotel, in Las Vegas, NV. Trip includes round trip coach air transportation for winner and his/her guest to Las Vegas; hotel accommodations for five nights; ground transportation to/from airport (while in Las Vegas) and breakfast daily for winner and his/her guest.

They're also giving away a 32GB iPod Touch for each of the weekly winners.

You can enter the contest at the FanNation site HERE.

The Steelers Super Bowl Rings

The Pittsburgh Steelers rings for their 2008 Super Bowl win are pretty impressive.

The Steelers logo on the top of the ring is all made of precious stones, and are surrounded by six diamonds to represent their six title wins. There are also seven diamonds on each tip for the teams seven AFC Championships. Add them together, and you get fourteen which stands for the number of Division titles. Total, there are 63 round, brilliant cut diamonds totaling 3.61 carats.

One side of the ring depicts six Lombardi Trophies rising from Heinz Field, the final score, the year (2008), and the Super Bowl logo for that year. The opposing side of the ring is personalized with each individual player’s name and jersey number, and has a Steelers helmet and an NFL shield.

If you're interested, you can check out all of the Super Bowl rings over at ESPN.com HERE.

Vote On The 2009 Denver Broncos Cheerleaders

I can't find anything on this page that says if your votes actually mean anything at all. Also, I think they could have done a much better job of bios.

If you have some time to kill though, and want to check out the girls that might make the Broncos teams for 2009, you can hit the site HERE and cast your votes.

Thoughts On The Draft

Well, none of the interesting things I thought might happen, actually happened. The only moderate surprise was that the Jets were the team that traded up and picked up Mark Sanchez. It'll be interesting to see if Sanchez was worth it.

You can check out all of the draft picks over at ESPN HERE, and of course read all of the analysts thoughts on who did a good job, and who didn't.

Miss Football?

I already miss Football. The season is over and the draft seems a long way off. On top of that the Arena League used to be a decent Football fix and they're not having a season this year.

Well, to get my fix I've joined a couple of simulation leagues over at SportsSims. The idea is pretty simple, you grab a team, draft, trade, set up a game plan, and the games get simulated. There's not a lot of control over your team when playing the games, and there are more than a few times that you'll say "Man, I wish that…", but it's free, so it's hard to complain too much. Seasons are always starting, and each season is 28 days long, from pre-season to Sim Bowl.

I have two teams, one in the SCHMIDT league, and the other in BEDNARIK. Both are in their pre-season, with the draft this coming Sunday. If there's a free spot, you might be able to join.

As I mentioned, the site isn't perfect, but they seem to be constantly working on it. Anyone else out there in a simulation league? I'd like to hear if it's any good, what you like or don't like, and so on.

You can take a look at SportSims HERE.

Burn Notice Big Game Sweepstakes

Couple of things here:

First, if your not watching the show Burn Notice, you're seriously missing out on a great show. Plus, it's educational.

Second, I'm kind of upset that I haven't been able to track down one contest to send you to this year's Super Bowl, or at least to Vegas to watch (and of course bet on) the game.

Third, if you want a chance to go to next year's Super Bowl, Burn Notice is having a contest. I guess the tie-in here is that the show is set in Miami, and that's where next year's Super Bowl is.

The Grand prize is a three night/ four day trip for Grand Prize Winner and one guest to Miami, Florida. The Trip will consist of: Round-trip, commercial coach-class air transportation for two; Luxury accommodations for three nights at a hotel; Four day car rental; Two tickets to Super Bowl XLIV; $500.00 spending cash for the winner; and dinner for two at a local hot spot, and breakfast each morning.

Pretty good deal all around. The contest runs through March 11, 2009 and you can enter it HERE.

Now go set your Tivo's (or nameless not-as-good DVR's) to start recording Burn Notice.

The Six Strangest Super Bowl Prop Bets

Esquire magazine ran an article about some of the strange Super Bowl bets you can make. All of these were taken off of BetUS.com, so you might not find them everywhere.

The six they list as the strangest are:

1. Springsteen’s halftime set list.

2. Number of songs played by Bruce Springsteen during the halftime show.

3. The odds on a halftime show "wardrobe malfunction."

4. First item caught on camera, being thrown on the field.

5. The player most likely to get arrested leading up to or after the Super Bowl.

6. The first end zone celebration.

You can read the article HERE to see all of the odds for the bets.

There's also a short question and answer with Christopher Erb, Senior Director of Marketing, EA Sports.

Kellogg’s 2010 Big Game VIP Getaway Sweepstakes

This is a pretty sweet contest. The only downside is it's for the 2010 Super Bowl, and not this year's. When I started the post, I assumed it was for this year's game, which was a little disappointing. If you win though, it's definitely something to look forward to for next year.

The contest though is pretty impressive. The Grand prize winner getsa 4-day and3-night trip for themselves and three very lucky friends. The package includes: first class airfare to Miami; transportation to and from your house to the airport, to/from the airport to the hotel, and to and from the game; dinner on Friday; tickets to the game with a professional athlete (they don't say who); admission to some of the pre-game events (they don't say which ones yet); 4-days luxury class rental car (they just cut you a $1,000 check); and $3,500 to spend however the hell you want.

You can enter the contest HERE, and it ends 4/30/09,so you have all kinds of time.
