Win A Trip To See The Pacquiao Vs. Hatton Fight

As a big boxing fan, this might be the best Vegas contest I've ever posted.

The Grand Prize is a 4-day/3-night trip from 4/30/09 to 5/3/09 to Las Vegas, Nevada to for the winner and guest to attend the Pacquiao vs. Hatton PPV event on 5/2, plus the official weigh in, taping of Extra with Mario Lopez, screening of the 24/7 finale and pre-fight party. Prize includes hotel accommodations for three nights (1 room, double occupancy) and round-trip coach air transportation from gateway airport nearest winner's home.

Not a lot of other bells and whistles with this one, but it would be awesome to see this fight. It has the possibility to be the fight of the year, and could be an instant classic.

The contest runs through April 22nd, 2009, and you can enter it HERE.

Pacquiao vs. Hatton – “The Battle of East and West”

Looks like this was just announced. The fight isn't until May, and I'm already looking forward to it. I'm pretty sure this is all from the press release, but I pulled it from East Side Boxing:

The anticipation is growing and the stage is now set for two of boxing’s biggest stars, Ring Magazine’s number one ranked pound for pound fighter MANNY “Pac Man” PACQUIAO and IBO and Ring Magazine World Junior Welterweight Champion RICKY “The Hitman” HATTON to meet in “The Battle of East and West,” Saturday, May 2 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. These two boxing artists, who will rumble for Hatton’s World Junior Welterweight Championships, will have a 20 x 20 foot canvas to paint a black and blue masterpiece that the world is anxiously waiting to see. Pacquiao and Hatton boast a combined record of 93-4-2 (68 KOs), a winning percentage of 94% and a victory by knockout ratio of 73%. The bout will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT..

Pavlik and Cotto Both Get Easy Wins

I watched both these fights tonight, and although neither of them were all that exciting, I'm hoping both wins sets up something good for these two fighters.

Cotto (33-1, 27 KO) won the vacant WBO welterweight title with a TKO of England's Michael Jennings (34-2, 16 KO). Jennings looked ok until the fourth round when he was knocked down twice. He survived the round, but the ref had to stop it in the fifth round after Jennings was again knocked down. Jennings just looked totally out matched, as Cotto seemed to have a very easy time of it.

It took Kelly Pavlik (35-1, 31 KO) nine rounds to defeat Marco Antonio Rubio (43-5-1, 37 KO). Rubio went into his corner after the ninth round, and never left, throwing in the towel. Pavlik was in control of the fight the whole time, except for maybe the 6th or 7th round, when Rubio tried to let loose a little. Rubio was hurt a few times, and by the end of the ninth, the writing was on the wall. Pavlik was either going to knock him out, or he would loose once it went to the cards. Rubio did show a good chin though.

There's nothing up just yet, but you should be able to hit East Side Boxing in the next day or two for some good breakdowns of the fights, and what might be next for both fighters.

The Margarito vs. Mosley fight

First off, I can't believe that I totally forgot that the fight between these two was this weekend. I would have liked to have watched this one, and it sounds like it was a good one.

In a surprise upset, 37 year old “Sugar” Shane Mosley knocked out Antonio Margarito in the ninth round. Not only that, but most of the reports that I read of the fight are saying that “Sugar” Shane pretty much owned the fight from the first round bell.

If you'd like to read a breakdown or two of the fight, you can head over to East Side Boxing HERE or HERE.

I'll have to comb through the upcoming fight dates to see if anything good is close.

Cotto vs. Jennings and Pavlik vs. Rubio

I thought I would throw this out there so I don't miss it later. I'm looking forward to seeing both of these fights, and hopefully seeing Pavlik wail on Rubio. Here's the details:

It will be a tale of two cities when two-division world champion MIGUEL COTTO returns to the “Mecca of Boxing,” Madison Square Garden and World Middleweight Champion KELLY “The Ghost” PAVLIK makes his world title defense a real homecoming at the Chevrolet Centre in Youngstown, Ohio. Cotto and Pavlik headline an exciting night of championship boxing fighting in winner-take-all world championship brawls.

Cotto will be taking on top-rated contender MICHAEL JENNINGS for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title. Pavlik will be defending his title against mandatory challenger and No. 1 contender MARCO ANTONIO RUBIO. These four warriors have a combined record of 143-7-1 (110 KOs), a winning percentage of 95% and a victory by knockout ratio of 77%.

Two title fights in two different towns on one pay-per-view broadcast! This event is so big, both Michael Buffer and Jimmy Lennon, Jr. will be introducing the main events from New York and Youngstown, respectively. Spectators at The Garden will be able to see the live broadcast of the Pavlik-Rubio fight. Spectators at the Chevrolet Centre will be able to see the live broadcast of the Cotto-Jennings fight. Promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank, the Cotto-Pavlik doubleheader will take place Saturday, February 21 and will be broadcast Live on Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.

Valuev Vs. Holyfield This Satuday, December 20th

As far as I can tell, this isn't being shown on TV anywhere, and I'm not sure that I'd watch it anyway. This could be a slaughter.

Nicolay Valuev is the current WBA champion, and this is a title fight. Evander is 11 years older, 100 pounds lighter, and almost a foot shorter. Plus, in his last fight a year ago was a 12 round loss to Sultan Ibragimov where I hear Evander pretty much lost every round.

For Valuev, I guess this would look like an easy win against a once great name. For Holyfield, I think it's all about the money. It was reported in June that Holyfield's $10 million dollar home was under foreclosure and being auctioned off, he was being sued by a consulting company for not paying back a $550,000 loan, and he was behind on his child support payments.

I'd love to see Evander get in a lucky punch, win the title, get one more big payday, and retire. I have a bad feeling it's not going to happen though.

The fight is this Satuday, December 20th, in Zurich, Switzerland. If anyone knows if it's going to be on TV anywhere in the U.S., let me know.

Margarito vs. Mosley

This one was just announced, so look for more about it in the coming days.

This is from the news section over at East Side Boxing:

World Boxing Association welterweight world champion ANTONIO MARGARITO and three-division world champion SUGAR SHANE MOSLEY will host a news conference announcing their world welterweight title fight promoted by Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions, Margarito vs. Mosley will take place on Saturday, January 24, at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Calif. The 12-round welterweight championship bout will be broadcast live on HBO World Championship Boxing, beginning at 10 p.m. ET /7 p.m. PT.

This has the potential to be a pretty good fight. Of course that's what I thought about the De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao fight, and I couldn't have been more wrong.

Pacquiao Destroys De La Hoya

I was really looking forward to this fight. I read a few articles early on that said De La Hoya would be the bigger guy, and that Pacquiao wouldn't be able to hang in there very long. Nothing could have been further from the truth.

From the first bell, it was pretty clear that Pacquiao was just too fast for De La Hoya. I thought that maybe De La Hoya would get the feel of Pacquiao speed, and start getting in some good shots here and there, but that never happened. Instead, Pacquiao just became more and more confident that there was nothing that De La Hoya could do about his speed, and started to punish De La Hoya. To tell you how bad it was, Pacquiao landed 59% of his power punches. That's just amazing.

At the end of the 8th round, everyone that was anyone was in De La Hoya's corner, telling him that if he didn't defend himself, they were stopping the fight. At that point, De La Hoya's trainer said that he wanted to throw in the towel, and that there was no reason for De La Hoya to go back out for the 9th round. You could see the disappointment in De La Hoya's eyes has he agreed, and the fight was over.

The fight was officially called as a TKO in the 8th round. I would have never bet that the fight would have been so lopsided that De La Hoya would have thrown in the towel.

The only interesting thing I can say about the fight is that I may have just watched the end of The Golden Boy's career as a boxer. I guess there's always a chance he might put together one more big name fight. Maybe to try and go out on a high note. After the beating he took this past Saturday night, I think he should just retire. It was a good run, but now it's over.

As for Pacquiao, I really look forward to see him fight again, whoever that may be. I hadn't really gotten a chance to see Pacquiao fight up until this point, and he impressed the hell out of me. If he stays in this form, I'm not sure there's anyone out there tha he can't beat.

De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao This Saturday, December 6th

If you haven't already heard about it, the big fight is this coming Saturday. It should be a pretty good one, although a lot of people think De La Hoya will pull out a win. Last lines on the fight that I saw were:

Oscar De la Hoya -175
Manny Pacquiao +145

About the fight from East Side Boxing:

The wait is over and the fight is on. . .Olympic gold medalist and 10-time world champion “The Golden Boy” OSCAR DE LA HOYA will face current Ring Magazine No. 1-ranked pound for pound champion MANNY “Pacman” PACQUIAO on Saturday, December 6 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada in a bout that will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View.

Presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, Inc., the bout will be a 12-round, non-title fight contested at the 147-pound welterweight limit. This exciting and intriguing match-up pits two of the most recognizable and popular talents in the sport today in what will surely be the grand finale of the 2008 boxing calendar year.

“Manny Pacquiao is considered the best fighter in boxing today and I always want to fight the best,” said De La Hoya. “I am glad we were able to make this fight happen because while Pacquiao is at the pinnacle of his success and has defeated all of the top fighters he has faced, I am going to show the world that it stops with me. December 6 can’t get here soon enough.”

“This is my greatest challenge,” said Pacquiao. “When I take that walk to the ring to fight Oscar, I will carry all the people of The Philippines – the entire country – on my shoulders. I promise I will fight with all of my heart and that I will give everything I have. Like my trainer Freddie Roach says, I have what it takes to win the biggest fight of my life.”

The fight is on HBO Pay-Per-View, starting at 9pm.
