Japan Self-Defense Force Sunglasses

Self defense Sunglasses

Not sure what these look like, but if you have a bad habit of breaking your sunglasses, this might be a good idea. The problem is that they cost $317. Here's a little bit about them:

The Japan Self-Defense Force Sunglasses have been officially endorsed by the Japanese military and not only look super cool, but are ultra strong as well. The lens will not fracture even if struck at 171km/h (106mph) by a 6.55mm (0.3") diameter object, nor do they shatter if a 500g shaft of iron is dropped on them from 1.27m.

If you wanted to buy a pair, you grab a pair HERE.

Discovery Adventures From The Discovery Channel

I don't know about you, but I can pretty much watch the  Discovery Channel all day. I was pretty intrigued to hear that the Channel has just launched a new website called Discovery Adventures. You can start booking trips as of today, July 31st, 2009, and there are currently 31 itineraries to 18 different destinations to choose from with departures slated for December 2009.

You can check out the site HERE.

I haven't looked through them yet, but I'll probably post some favorites in the coming days. Here's the press release:

Discovery Communications, the world’s leading nonfiction media company and parent to Discovery Channel, unveils trip itineraries for Discovery Adventures, their new adventure travel brand, at www.discoveryadventures.com. Thirty one exclusive trips to 16 worldwide destinations are available to book beginning July 31st with departures beginning this December.  Discovery Adventures brings the experience of Discovery to life by invoking the adventure and exploration found in popular Discovery Channel programming.

Developed in partnership with the preeminent adventure travel provider G.A.P Adventures, Discovery Adventure tours offers truly affordable, comfortable and authentic experiences that go beyond the surface with in-depth, real-life encounters — encouraging participants to become part of the local cultures that they have come to know through top-rated Discovery Channel series. Each tour is developed to include off-the-beaten-path experiences and deeper exploration into the history and traditions of each destination, delivering a non-traditional tourist vacation.

Experts from the Discovery Channel were tapped for their insight and, along with the unsurpassed destination experience of the G.A.P Adventures’ team, Discovery Adventures itineraries are the ultimate in adventure travel. Itineraries will enable travelers to explore regions featured on Discovery Channel programs such as Man Vs. Wild(Costa Rica, Mexico, Alaska), Out of Egypt (Egypt) and Discovery Atlas (China). Exhilarating expeditions include educational tourism, cultural immersion, wildlife encounters, participation in sustainable world practices, epicurean adventures as well as geographic and environmental exploration.  Discovery Adventures branded trips are hosted in destinations including, North America (Alaska, Southwest), Latin America (Peru, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rica), Africa (Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Egypt, Morocco) and Asia (India, China, Thailand).

In addition to featuring the trip specifics, itineraries and awe-inspiring imagery from the featured destinations, the www.discoveryadventures.com web site will feature stories from Discovery network personalities who share both their love of adventure and stories from their different travel experiences.   Dave Salmoni of Animal Planet’s Into The Pride, Kara Cooney, Egyptologist and host of the Discovery Channel series Out of Egypt and Andy Dehart, Discovery Channel’s resident shark expert featured on Shark Week are among the initial personalities featured on the site.  Additionally, Discovery Channel’s behind the scenes writers and cinematographers will be looked to for contribution and often participation in providing expertise and first-hand knowledge along the journey.

“Discovery Adventures brings Discovery to life, providing travel enthusiasts and brand loyalists with an exciting new way to actively participate in channel’s offerings," says Elizabeth Bakacs, Vice President, Licensing, Discovery Commerce. “As the leader in adventure tourism, G.A.P. Adventures is the perfect partner to launch Discovery Adventures and immerse viewers in the wonders and diversity of cultures around the world as seen every day on Discovery Channel."

Some of the deeper cultural access travelers will experience on Discovery Adventures include: in Mexico, visiting families in the Yucatan for customary tortilla making and enjoying a trip down the Sian Ka'an Biosphere canal as the Mexican natives do; in South Africa, preparing a traditional barbeque with native tribes; in Southwest U.S.,  a guided tour of Monument Valley with Navajo Indian guide; in Brazil, trekking over the Ibera reserve to observe the Pantanal wildlife — a hidden gem not often explored; in Egypt, touring the Pyramids Sakkara and Dahshur that pre-date Giza; in India, encounter a spiritual awakening with a visit to Sarnath, the birthplace of Buddhism; in Costa Rica, study at La Selva biological station the premiere, private ecology research reserve.

Trips include arrival transfer, continental breakfast, air-conditioned rooms, complete with en suite bathrooms, cafe/bar and internet. Prices start at $2,000 per person, excluding airfare and each tour consists of group sizes ranging from six to 15 people with trip lengths from three to 24 days.

Cape Town Great White Shark Dive

I still want to do this at some point. Mainly so I can take a picture like the one to the left, and hang it on the wall.

Here's all about the trip from the Black Tomato site:

You're submerged in a cage in Shark Alley. Seals are playing in the safety of the shallows a few metres away. You can hear the gentle swish of the sea lapping against the boat behind you, and you can feel the rubber of your snorkel hugging your mouth. You nervously turn to look through the clear water at seals catching kelp for dinner, and as your turn back your pulse begins to pound as the fin of a great white skims past your eyes. Silently gliding through the water, these colossal sharks are the most feared animals on the planet, and now you can see them up close, with just a cage preventing you becoming lunch.

Sound like a dream? Welcome to the wildlife sanctuary of Gansbaai, near Cape Town, which is universally known as the top spot to see the earth's greatest predator. With the densest population of Great White Sharks in the world, it's a must-visit destination for those looking for a real adrenaline rush.

While you're over there, why not stay in one of the best hotels in South Africa: the intimate Kensington Place - where you can wake up to dramatic views of Table Mountain. Finished off with  exceptional service and gourmet cuisine, this is a top-notch base from which to see the best of South Africa.

You probably already know that Cape Town is effortlessly stylish, and that it boasts stunning vistas from Table Mountain, you're also doubtless aware of the fantastic sunbathing on the hip beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay, exquisite restaurants and legendary nightlife. But now you can go one step further by experiencing the thrill of diving with the colossal Great White.

There's no need to worry about bringing a guidebook either. Our local knowledge service provides access to Cape Town's top tables.  Whether you're after a long lunch or a stylish dinner we can get you into all the best places; Ginja, 95 Keerom, Baia, Millers Thumb, you name it, we'll reserve it.

This trip starts at $3000, and goes up from there. You can check it out at the Black Tomato site HERE.

Bombay Sapphire Contest

Men.Style and Bombay Sapphire Gin are holding a contest to send you to three great locations over ten days. All you have to do is write a 50 word essay telling them what the spirit of exploration means to you. The entries will then be judged, and a winner picked, so you'll have to come up with something good.

The winner will receive a ten day trip with a film crew to Spain, Morocco, and Thailand. The trip includes round trip airfare and accommodations at hotels determined exclusively by Sponsor. As the Grand Prize Winner you must be available to travel between August and September of 2008 on a date specified by Sponsor.

Basically they're going to drop you into three different countries, let you go exploring (hence the theme) and record it. It's really light on some of the details of what you'll be doing once you hit each country, but it does sound like a pretty impressive trip anyway.  Plus, you have to think there's going to be a lot of Bombay Sapphire Gin drank along the way.

You can enter the contest at the Men.Style site HERE

Where Are They Now? – Tommy Morrison

This was a blast from the past for me, so I thought I would throw it out there. Here's a little bit from the beginning of the interview:

Tommy “The Duke” Morrison is a former WBO and IBC Heavyweight Champion. Morrison began his pro career in 1988. He gained international popularity when Sylvester Stallone cast him as Tommy Gunn in Rocky V. Morrison lost his first bid for a title in 1991 against Ray Mercer. He rebounded and in 1993 beat George Foreman for the WBO title and in 1995 beat Razor Ruddock for the IBC title. His career was derailed by a positive test for HIV in 1996; a test Morrison insists was a false positive. For the next eleven years Morrison was rarely heard of until 1996, when he announced his comeback. He was licensed in February 2007, after a negative HIV test and KO’d John Castle in two rounds. Most recently in February, Morrison beat Matt Weishaar in Leon, Mexico.

You can read the whole interview over at East Side Boxing HERE.

The Indiana Jones Travel Experiences

One of the many movie tie-ins for the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, opening May 22nd, is Expedia's new India Jones Adventure Tours. The tours are all inspired from the four movies, and will take you to India, Egypt, Italy, Nepal, China, Peru, Jordan, Mexico and the U.S. Southwest. The trips run anywhere from six to twelve days in length, and cost between $2000 and $3500. Expedia has also ranked them by trip style (guided to independent), it's culture shock rating and it's adventure and physical toll rating, so you can pick something appropriate.

There's also a Quest for the Golden Suitcase contest going on. You can play each day at the site, and the grand prize is any two of the India Jones Adventure Tours. If you register, you can also win one of 1400 instant prizes, and an "ultimate movie adventure" trip to California.

You can hit the Expedia site HERE to read all about the trips, and go HERE to enter the contest. The contest site has some Indiana Jones music playing, so you might want to turn down the sound if you're at work.

Cultural Treasures- Around the World by Private Jet

If you're looking for a unique trip, and have a good deal of time and money to spend, this would be an amazing way to see the world.

Abercrombie & Kent have created several dream vacations that will take you around the world by private jet. The Cultural Treasures trip begins on October 10th, 2008 in Los Angles, and ends on November 3rd in Boston Massachusetts. In-between those two dates, you visit Tahiti,  Australia, Myanmar, India, Dubai, Jordan, Italy, Prague, and St. Petersburg.

During the trip, you'll fly in a private Boeing 757-200 ER aircraft that has been reconfigured to accommodate just 50 passengers in VIP seats, have multilingual tour escorts, stay in the best accommodations, and get privileged access to exclusive locations, unique attractions and special celebrations not available to most visitors.

This might be a once in a lifetime trip, and it of course doesn't come cheap. The trip is $98,900 per person, but does include pretty much everything you're going to be doing on the trip. If this one doesn't interest you however, there's three other private trips, such as the one that will take you around the world, one for the nine wonders, and an Africa trip.

You can check out this one, and all of the others, at the Abercrombie & Kent site HERE.
