Port Ellen 29 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt
The 2008 release of the single malt took the top prize at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, even through the distillery that made it has been closed for the last 26 years.
When the Port Ellen Islay distillery closed, the remaining whisky was locked up in the warehouse. The current owners now make limited edition releases, and decline to say just how much of the whisky they have left. There were a total of 6,600 bottles in the 2008 release, but the winning single malt was part of a even more limited batch of 200 bottles, some of which have been sold on the internet for upwards of $2,800.
The 2009 release is due out in September, and if it's priced about the same as the 2008, will go for about $250 a bottle.
