The Glenmorangie Astar
I guess this one has been out for a little while, but I thought it would be worth mentioning. This new Astar bottling from Glenmorangie is the latest incarnation of the Artisan cask bottling from a few years ago.
Glenmorangie’s Master Distiller Dr. Bill Lumsden changed the wood regime for a number of white oak barrels that originate from the Ozark Mountains in Missouri. The lengthened the curing time from the typical 3 months or kiln-style drying, to two full years’ air seasoning. They also reduced the toasting time from 2 minutes to just 30 seconds to ensure that wood sugars in the new barrels are not burnt, imparting a bitter taste to the whiskey. The lower toasting time also give the Astar it's lighter color. The barrels used to age Astar are first filled with a new spirit and matured for 3 years at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, then emptied and shipped to Scotland in one piece to preserve their integrity. They are then filled with Glenmorangie's new spirit and matured for 10 years. Astar is bottled at cask strength, which is 100 proof.
You'll have to look around to find someone to ship it too you most likely, which means there's going to be shipping added to it's $90+ price tag.
