Mosley KO’s Mayorga In 12th

Here's a little bit about the fight from the HBO site:

Shane Mosley continued to defy Father Time and demonstrated once again that time has not passed him by. Returning to the ring after the longest layoff of his career - nine months - Mosley struggled with a more disciplined and in-shape Ricardo Mayorga than usual though most of the fight. But with the fight very close on the scorecards, Mosley found a new gear in the 12th round, knocking down the Nicaraguan with 16 seconds to go with a right-left-right combo. Mayorga got up and then the 37-years-young Mosley put Mayorga down for the count with a solid left hook with just one second left in the fight.

And here's some details about the under card:

In the co-feature, Berto (23-0, 19 KOs) took on his most skilled and toughest opponent to date in former world champion Forbes (33-7, 9 KOs) in his first defense of a welterweight title he won in June. Berto showed much-improved defense and tremendous conditioning, fighting as hard in the 12th round against an older opponent who has never been knocked out to earn a unanimous decision, 118-109 twice, and 116-111.

The James Bond Smirnoff Promotion

Smirnoff Vodka has announced a partnership with the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, which is set to open in November. Starting in October a Smirnoff Black limited-edition stainless steel cocktail shaker will  begin being sold in duty-free shops at airports worldwide.

“Almost half a century since the debut of the ‘shaken not stirred’ vodka martini, Smirnoff and James Bond are still the perfect match: two bold, iconic brands that epitomize originality and authenticity,” said Diageo Global Senior Vice-President Philip Gladman. “This renewed partnership gives vodka drinkers around the world a taste of the Bond lifestyle, from cocktails to prestigious VIP premieres.”

Smirnoff made it's original appearance alongside Bond in Dr No, the first James Bond movie, which premiered in 1962. Sean Connery’s request for a “martini, shaken not stirred” was made with Smirnoff vodka, and helped change how people made 007’s favorite cocktail.

Win A Wine Vault

The Amcor wine vault sounds pretty good. Not one of the most impressive I've posted, but the big bonus here is that you can win one. Here's a little bit about it:

The Amcor WV-100 wine refrigerator offers many deluxe features. It is designed to be both freestanding and built-in under counter unit, offering 5 cedar wood trimmed shelves which can store up to 100 bottles of wine (capacity varies with bottle size) within its attractive black cabinet. Two separate cooling zones allow you to store both red and white wines in one convenient space. The LED temperature indicator provides the temperature readout of each cooling zone. In addition, this wine refrigerator includes interior lighting, solid aluminum door pulls, a security lock w/key and the interior charcoal odor control module.

The Rachael Ray Magazine site is giving one away on the site HERE. The contest runs until October 30, 2008.If you're going to enter, I'd pay close attention to all of the check boxes at the bottom of the entry form. There's five of them there, that are automatically checked for you, that you may want to uncheck to avoid getting any unwanted emails.

Newly Updated Rooms At Treasure Island

I never make it down to TI that much when I'm in Vegas. Usually I make the one walk through at least, and maybe play in a tournament at most in their somewhat small poker room. Well, TI is trying to pull in more customers, and have made some updates.

Treasure Island has updated their suites with pillow top beds, 26-inch LCD flat-screen televisions, to MP3/iPod-compatible clock-radios. They've also upgraded they're suites, whichall now have foyers, sitting areas, dual bathrooms, whirlpool tubs, his-and-her shows and closets and dinning nooks for up to four people.

The rooms during the week currently start at $109 a night, and a "petite" suite starts at $149. You'll of course pay a lot more for the weekend nights. You can see the rooms at the TI site HERE. Watch it though, there's music, so turn down your speakers if you're someplace where you don't want music blasting.

“Sugar” Shane Mosley vs. Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga This Saturday

I'm really not sure how excited I am about this fight, but it has the potential to be pretty good. I might plan to hit a bar and watch it. Here's the fight info from HBO:

Expect a September heat wave when former lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KOS) stands toe-to-toe with Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga (28-6-1, 22 KOS), one of boxing's most animated fighters, in a 12-round junior middleweight bout. In his first fight in Southern California since 2000, Pomona, Cal., native Mosley returns to the ring in search of another title shot. A native of Managua, Nicaragua, Mayorga hasn't fought since handling Fernando Vargas last November. He's never ducked a challenge, having tangled with Vernon Forrest, Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya.

In the opening bout, newly crowned welterweight titleholder Andre Berto (22-0, 19 KOS) defends his belt against crafty veteran Steve Forbes (33-6, 9 KOS) in a 12-round, 147-pound tilt. Florida native Berto captured his first title by defeating never-before KO'd Miki Rodriguez in June, scoring his 19th knockout in just 22 fights. Las Vegas resident Forbes is a formidable contender who elevated his status significantly last May when he went the distance against Oscar De La Hoya.

The fight is on regular HBO this Saturday September 27th at 10:30pm.

The New G1 Google Phone

Google's new phone, called Andriod, G1, or Gphone, has a few reviews out for it, and they've been mixed.

The phone is of course being compared to the iPhone, and so far most of the things I've seen are good, unless the reviewer really likes his iPhone, and then the Gphone just isn't that great. Though I hope you really didn't expect any website with Apple in it's name to tell people to start ditching their iPhones.

Regardless, here's some of the basics of what the Google phone has to offer over the iPhone. First, you can flip up the top to reveal a full physical keyboard, instead of an onscreen one like the iPhone has. The Google phone also comes with a 3.0-megapixel camera with photo-sharing capability, a memory expansion card slot, removable battery and voice dialing. A good comparison between this an the iPhone is that it has everything the iPhone does, plus all of the things that iPhone users had on their wish list.

The biggest difference between the two phones is the new Android operating system. Android is completely open, meaning that anyone can write software for it. This makes it totally different from Apple's approach of only letting you install applications from it's iTunes store that Apple has officially sanctioned. We'll have to see how the open approach works. It will more than likely mean a lot more applications than Apple has, and will add a lot of things that Apple won't allow, but without any controls on what gets onto the phone, it could lead to some bad situations after installing bad apps.

The phone itself has only been seen at trade shows, so no one has got their hands on one for a few days to really see what it's made of. The first Google phone to hit the shelves will be a T-Mobile version, cost $179.99 ($20 cheaper than the iPhone), and reports are that T-Mobile's plans are a lot easier on the wallet than AT&T, but also point out that T-Mobile only has a 3G network in 19 cities so far.

We'll have to wait and see how this plays out in the future. The iPhone may just keep it's dominance in the cell phone market, but remember, this has happened before. Once upon a time Apple computers were the thing to buy, and then someone came along and created an open computer platform (Microsoft) and it went badly for Apple. I doubt that history is going to repeat itself exactly like that, but only time will tell.
