WSOP Final Table
The field this year was 6,844 people, and now it's down to just nine players. I didn't recognize any of the names here, so it looks like we're going to have another non-pro player take home the top prize in poker.
In a twist to things this year, the final table won't play until November 9th, 2008. Which means the players will have to wait 117 days before they play again.
"The innovative change — offering fans an enhanced way of following the excitement and drama of high-stakes tournament play — was made in collaboration between the WSOP, ESPN and the WSOP Players Advisory Council," tournament organizers announced in a news release.
"This adjustment will add a new element to a very successful and popular event. We look forward to documenting all of the exciting stories that make the main event the seminal competition in all of poker." said Jamie Horowitz, senior producer, ESPN content development.
It looks like they are waiting until all the other tournaments are shown on TV first, and then will have a big semi-live thing at the end with the Championship final table play. I'm guessing this is so non one knows who will win the money, and so it'll boost ratings. I find it all pretty stupid making them wait that long.
Anyway, here are the names of the final nine, and their chip counts:
Dennis Phillips - 26,295,000
Craig Marquis - 10,210,000
Ylon Schwartz - 12,525,000
Scott Montgomery - 19,690,000
Darus Suharto - 12,520,000
David 'Chino' Rheem - 10,230,000
Ivan Demidov - 24,400,000
Kelly Kim - 2,620,000
Peter Eastgate - 18,375,000
