Giants Win The Super Bowl 17-14

Most of the game wasn't what you would call exciting, but it was one hell of a finish. I thought for sure when the Pats went up 14-10 that it was going to be one of those classic Patriots wins where something just goes wrong for the other team, as seemed to happen all year. Yet with 1:15 on the clock, third-and-5, Manning managed to fight his way out of what looked like what was going to be a sack, to hit wide receiver David Tyree for a 32-yard gain. Tyree also made the play of the game I think, with an amazing catch. Four plays later, he hit Plaxico Burress' for the winning touchdown.

A lot of people I know who really didn't care who won the game too much, came to the conclusion that they'd rather have the Patriots win, to see history made with the perfect season. I've had a soft spot for the Giants for a while now, coming from the long Sundays of hanging out with my friend Tony, flipping back and forth between watching my Bears and his Giants. There was also the huge underdog factor. The Patriots were such a perfect team, and the press would have you to believe with the perfect quarterback considering how much they talked about who he was dating and the rest of his personal life, that it almost took on a Hollywood sort of feel. I mean, how many sports movies have you seen where the perfect team that never gets beat, loses in the championship game to the scrappy underdogs that everyone says doesn't have a chance? Pretty much every sports movie ever made. The only way it would get any closer is if Eli Manning had been working on a farm the previous year, and some new coach came and convinced him to join the team.

The Giants pulled off that Hollywood ending last night. I'll admit we're not likely to see another chance at a perfect season anytime soon, but I'm fine with letting the 72' Dolphins hold that title a while longer. The Patriots are going to be ok, and probably have another chance at a Super Bowl win next year. The Giants are up in the air on how they'll do next season. This might have been the Giants one moment of glory, or at least this version of the Giants anyway. Regardless, they earned it.
