Win A Chunk Of Cash

Normally Good Housekeeping isn't really on my places to hi, or talk about. However, when they're giving away $250,000 dollars, I'm instantly interested.

The contest runs until the end of the year, so you have a lot of time to enter. The winner gets the cash, and if you're like me, I'm sure you can think of all kinds of things to do with that kind of money.

You can enter the contest HERE.

A Luxury Trip To The Dentist

Those that have money still need a dentist, and to that end, dentists have begun partnering with resorts and spas to create a luxury visit and stay.

One such dentist is Dr. Gary Braunstein that works in the Encinitas area of North San Diego. He has partnered with the award-winning La Costa Resort and Spa, located on 400 rolling acres in the North County coastal community of Carlsbad, California. La Costa Resort and Spa has been a staple in Southern California since its debut in 1965 as the first American full-service spa resort. Like Dr. Braunstein, La Costa Resort and Spa has proven to adapt to the times, made evident by undergoing a recent $140 million renovation. The resort offers its discerning guests lavish accommodations, world-class cuisine, and two PGA championship 18-hole golf courses designed by the famed Dick Wilson.

There are a number of dentists doing this, and Just Luxe has an interesting article HERE about several of them.

The San Diego Hard Rock

The Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego is set to open this fall, and is strategically located across the street from the San Diego Convention Center, one block from PETCO Park and at the entrance of the hip historic Gaslamp Quarter. A century ago, Wyatt Earp ruled the dirt streets of the Gaslamp, when bars and brothels were the name of the game. Today the Gaslamp is the country's most talked about urban revitalization project, where you'll find over 100 of the hottest bars and restaurants in Southern California.

The rooms in the Hotel consist of 244 Studios, each with signature "Sleep like a Rock" beds; 159 Hard Rock Suites including spa-like bathrooms and sensual mood lighting; and 17 Rock Star Suites designed for rock 'n roll royalty. One Rock Star Suite was designed by the Black Eyed Peas, featuring hand selected furniture, linens and personal touches. "Extras" in the Rock Star Suites include a fire pit, deck seating for 20, gorgeous panoramic views of the San Diego Bay, and an outdoor hot tub. Even the staff uniforms have the Hard Rock's rock 'n roll thread running through them, a custom creation designed by Will.I.am of the Black Eyed Peas. Other amenities include a spa, a lobby lounge, and a roof deck bar. The restaurant in the Hotel will have sushi bar fare and nouveau Japanese cuisine, and designed by Tokyo-born Nobu Matsuhisa.

You can check out more details at the San Diego Hard Rock Hotel site HERE.

No Man’s Land Up For Sale

No Man’s Land Fort was originally built between 1861 and 1880 off the coast of Portsmouth, England and was designed to house up to 80 soldiers to help fend off the French Navy. The fort is almost 200 feet across, and 60 feet above the ocean. It's also somewhat self sufficient having it's own electric generators and water supply. Access to the man made island is either by boat, or landing at one of it's two helipads.

The Fort was renovated and turned into a luxury hotel some time ago, with 21 rooms and a heated indoor swimming pool that sits under a glass canopy. The current owner ran into some trouble and is currently in jail, so No Man’s Land Fort is now up for sale and is expecting to go for around $8 million.

Legal, Home Grown, Absinthe

Ted Breaux is a chemist from New Orleans that has been working for several years with a French distillery to create classic absinthes. Illegal in the U.S. since 1912 because of the ingredient thujone, which is supposed to be what causes hallucinations, it's been sought after much like Cuban cigars.

Thanks to Ted Breaux, the U.S. now has a legal import absinthe called Lucid. According to the distributor "Lucid represents a breakthrough product for the U.S. market, as it is the first true, Grande Wormwood-based Absinthe of its type since before prohibition. Unlike imitators in the U.S. and many of the so-called "Absinthe" products that litter the international markets, lucid is crafted directly from select whole herbs, including Grande Wormwood, and never from cheaper assemblages, macerations, extracts or oils."

Lucid is of course hard to find, as production is limited, and demand high. How close is it to the "real" thing? Several reviewers at Absinthe Buyers Guide gave it an average of about 7.5/10 overall, and you can read those reviews HERE. Where as the reviewer in Wired said it was passable, but he still preferred other imports, and you can read that with a little more background information HERE.

Outdoor Decor

If you're looking for patio furniture, and want something a little more stylish, the Palm Coast Outdoor Furniture would be worth a look. Each piece is crafted from roto-molded polyethylene compounded with UV inhibitors, to give the chairs a long life. The best part of the furniture is that they're made to be modular, so you can mix and match pieces, and put them in any configuration that best suits you patio. The collection also comes with different armrest styles and a unique illuminated armrest that you can also use to connect the pieces.

You can see and read a little more about the furniture, at the Allegro Classics site HERE.

Hopkins Wins By Decision

There was a lot more action from both fighters than most had predicted, and even I think the fight was closer than the judges final score cards. In the end, Bernard Hopkins won a decision over Winky Wright by winning all three judges with the scores of 117-111, 117-111 and 116-112. Probably the biggest moment of the fight was when Wright became cut over his left eye by a head butt in the third round. From that moment, until the end of the fight, Wright seemed to be fighting worried. Little slower, little more cautious, than he should have been.

You can read several views of the fight, who seem to be split on who won, over at East Side Boxing HERE

Sony Goes Small With The BRAVIA

Sony has announced it's new "minimalist" BRAVIA DAV-X10 home theater system, that should be available around September. The system only has two speakers, but Sony has stated that thanks to their S-Force PRO Front Surround technology, you'll still get your surround sound, even if it is virtual, and a total of 480W of power. The main unit will also have touch-sensitive controls, a Bluetooth adapter, and upscale DVDs to 720p or 1080i. This new system will also play nice with any other BRAVIA gear you already own, or plan to buy, thanks to Sony's Theater Sync technology. No word on price yet.
